Wheat Ridge is a city located in Jefferson County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 32,913.

Wheat Ridge is located at 39°46'17" North, 105°5'46" West (39.771317, -105.096117).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23.6 km2 (9.1 mi2). 23.5 km2 (9.1 mi2) of it is land and 0.1 km2 (0.04 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.22% water.
Wheat Ridge Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there are 32,913 people, 14,559 households, and 8,313 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,398.0/km2 (3,621.0/mi2). There are 14,931 housing units at an average density of 634.2/km2 (1,642.7/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 89.21% White, 0.84% African American, 0.94% Native American, 1.37% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 4.99% from other races, and 2.55% from two or more races. 13.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,559 households out of which 25.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.4% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.9% are non-families. 35.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.85.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.2% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $38,983, and the median income for a family is $47,512. Males have a median income of $36,711 versus $28,370 for females. The per capita income for the city is $22,636. 8.9% of the population and 5.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.5% of those under the age of 18 and 8.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
Wheat Ridge History:

Wheat Ridge was founded as a community in 1859. It was a farming community that supported Denver and nearby mining communities, and became the largest producer of carnations worldwide until the mid-20th century. Wheat Ridge did not incorporate until August of 1969, when it was faced with annexation by surrounding cities. It currently has three National Historical Sites and one Colorado State Historical Site. The Wheat Ridge Historical Society, in cooperation with the Colorado Historical Society and the City of Wheat Ridge, is in the process of restoring one of the first Log Cabins still on the same site. This Building, known as the Baugh Cabin is anticipated to have restoration completed before 2008.
